BCAAs are metabolised directly in muscle tissue. During fasted cardio or long sessions, they prevent muscle catabolism (breakdown) — protecting gains you've worked hard for.
Leucine (the key amino) directly activates mTOR — the master switch for muscle protein synthesis. A threshold dose of ~3g Leucine per meal is required to trigger meaningful muscle growth.
Flavoured BCAAs make drinking water more enjoyable during long sessions, improving overall hydration. Better hydration means more reps, less fatigue, and faster recovery.
Do I need BCAAs if I already take whey protein?
Probably not. Whey protein is rich in BCAAs — a 25g scoop contains ~5–6g BCAAs naturally. If you're taking 1–2 scoops of whey daily, you're already getting sufficient BCAAs from your protein. BCAAs add value mainly for fasted training or long cardio without food.
What BCAA ratio should I look for?
2:1:1 (Leucine:Isoleucine:Valine) is the research-backed ratio. Higher Leucine ratios like 8:1:1 are marketing — excessive Leucine competes with the other aminos. Stick with the classic 2:1:1 unless budget is totally unconstrained.
When should I take BCAAs?
During or immediately before training, especially fasted workouts. Sip throughout a session. On rest days, there's little benefit — save them for training days. Post-workout BCAAs are redundant if you're having a whey shake.
Are BCAAs vegetarian?
Most BCAAs in India are derived from plant fermentation and are fully vegetarian. Some cheaper brands use duck feather hydrolysis — check the label for 'plant-based' or 'fermented'. AS-IT-IS and MuscleBlaze are vegetarian.
What is the difference between BCAA and EAA?
BCAAs are 3 of the 9 essential amino acids. EAAs (Essential Amino Acids) include all 9, making them a more complete amino acid supplement. EAAs are superior for muscle protein synthesis. BCAAs are cheaper and adequate for most training scenarios.
